N643 Antique SPIERS AYR No:7 Dovetailed Infill SMOOTHING plane

Vintage tools -  infill plane N643 

Up for sale is an antique DOVETAILED steel INFILL No:7 SMOOTHING PLANE with a ROSEWOOD INFILL by STEWART SPIERS of Ayr Scotland.

At sometime it has had a rather average looking “knob” added to the front bun, that should be removed & a piece of rosewood spliced over the top to bring it back to standard.

These really are the luxury yacht of the planing world, with an extra thick laminated steel cutter bedded against the rosewood infill, they never chatter.

Size: 190mm x 65mm with a 54mm cutter.

CONDITION

This plane is in authentic vintage condition, wear and tear consistent with age & use, the mouth is nice & tight, the rear handle is a replacement & has an old repair, a non standard “knob” added to the front bun. The short tapered cutter should be replaced with a proper parallel iron. It’s a lovely dovetailed smoothing plane from one of the best makers that would restore well.
